Fresno Bee:

"Saying he wanted to “man up” for a crime he committed four years ago, a Fresno man testified Thursday in graphic detail that he alone stabbed a registered sex offender 58 times and then strangled him inside a detached garage in southwest Fresno.

In 2014, David Barrera and Patricia Ann Perez were found guilty in Fresno Superior Court of first-degree murder in the killing of Lawrence Ballesteros. Because Barrera is a career criminal, he was sentenced to 80 years to life in prison. Perez was sentenced to 26 years to life in prison.

During the trial, Perez testified that she had no reason to kill Ballesteros. She said she and the victim were friends and she had offered him a place to live in the detached garage. She also testified she was drunk and passed out in her home when Ballesteros was killed."

"After waiting nearly a year, a Fresno woman finally got to tell the family of a man she killed in a drunken-driving crash that she was sorry.

Sheraea Lanae Gatlin wanted to apologize soon after the Aug. 10, 2015, crash that killed her boyfriend, Rodrigo Delgado, 24, but she was advised by her attorney not to implicate herself.

Because she pleaded no contest to vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, Superior Court Judge Alvin Harrell III gave Gatlin the go-ahead to read her apology to Delgado’s family and friends who filled the courtroom Thursday. Her words made some of them cry."

"Two Fresno residents were convicted Thursday in a bizarre murder-torture case.

Margaret Alaniz, 25, wiped tears from her eyes after a Fresno County Superior Court jury found her guilty of second-degree murder in the August 2013 stabbing death of 27-year-old Oscar Seja. The jury also found her guilty of torturing a woman identified in court only as Jane Doe.

Anthony Gilbert Nunez, 44, stood silently when the same verdict was announced for him."

Justice is near in the case of a deadly attack in a Fresno house wallpapered with drugs and violent crime.

"22 times," prosecutor Gabriel Brickey told the jury hearing evidence in the death of Oscar Seja. "22 separate times he was stabbed." That jury is now deciding whether the people accused of ruling the house are guilty of murder and torture.

Survival came at the cost of the burns she covered in bandages when she talked to Action News. It cost her sense of taste, and permanent hearing loss. But the woman who says Margaret Alaniz tortured her by pouring something like acid on her did survive. Oscar Seja did not."
